We aim to make it as easy for you to access our information and get in touch with us.
We follow the latest accessibility standards in designing and developing our website. We aim to meet, if not exceed, the ‘AA’ (or ‘AAA’) standard of the Website Accessibility Initiative (WAI) Guidelines published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
On our website, you can:
- Have text read aloud to you
- Make text look bigger
- Translate text into another language
- Simplify text
- Listen to the text on the go
- Focus on a few lines at a time
You can also adjust these things to suit your own specific needs using the settings menu.
You can do these things using BrowseAloud, which is the orange circle in the top right hand corner of your screen.
What is Browsealoud?
Browsealoud adds speech, reading, and translation support tools to websites. Browsealoud makes online content more accessible for people with Dyslexia, Low Literacy, English as a Second Language, and those with mild visual impairments.
How to use Browsealoud
Using the Toolbar
When you click on the orange circle, a toolbar will show with several buttons. Each button performs a different function allowing you to hear text read aloud, translated, to convert text to MP3 and to add a screen mask. You can also magnify text, simplify web pages, and set your own personalised settings.
Read the text aloud
To have the text on the page read aloud to you, open the toolbar by clicking on the orange circle in the top right hand corner of your screen and hover over text. BrowseAloud will read this text to you. If you prefer, you can change these setting so that instead of hovering over text to have this read aloud, you can highlight the text and have BrowseAloud Speak the Current Selection. You can turn on Speak the Current Selection by clicking on the hand symbol.
Magnify the text
With Browsealoud you have the option to magnify the text as it’s being read aloud to you. Click on the magnifying glass symbol to turn on the magnifier and then hover over the text you want magnified. You can personalise the font, size and colour to suit your needs in settings.
Translate the text
Browsealoud translates web pages into 99 languages and can speak aloud 40 of these language in a high quality, natural sounding native voice. Click on the globe symbol and select the language you want to translate the text to. This will reload the page in the language you’ve selected. To read this aloud, hover over text.
BrowseAloud allows you to apply a colour filter to your screen. A semi-opaque mask extends across the screen, leaving a letterbox reading window clear. This allows you to focus on a few lines at a time. Click on the symbol below to turn on the screen mask.
Simplify the text
To remove the clutter and distractions, such as pictures and adverts, allowing you to focus on the text you want to read, click on the symbol pictured below.
Generate an MP3 and listen to your pages on the go
Browsealoud converts any text that you select from a web page, into an audio file that you can then listen to at a later date at home, or on the move. Click on the symbol below to convert the page into an mp3.
In the settings menu you can personalise the features to suit your own specific needs. You can personalise the following:
- Highlight colours for text to speech and text magnification
- Set text magnifier on as default
- Select the size of the magnified text
- Switch hover to speak off
- Select voice speed
- Set the simplify feature on as default
- Identify links on a webpage

Other useful applications
Our website includes web safe colour and accessible fonts. It has been designed and tested in a variety of browsers.
Our website is compatible with most screen reading software and can be navigated using just the keyboard.
